Sources

Please take a look at some of these sites which I have found useful.  However, this list is not exhaustive, there are many sites throughout the posts on this blog which have been used once or twice that I haven't put on this website.

The Denver Pubic Library Digital Collections:  http://digital.denverlibrary.org/

The Denver Public Library is one of the largest public collections of history in the Western US.  One branch of the DPL is their Digital Collections, which include the Otto Perry photographic collection.  These photos, while public, cannot be used for commercial use without permissions.  For private blogs, such as this, attribution is a requirement which I gladly include whenever possible.  Most of their photos can be downloaded in small format.  This protects the digital collections from illegally being printed for purchase.

Silver City Historical Society: http://www.silvercitysd.com/

Silver City, South Dakota, is a small community that was founded along the tracks of the long abandoned Rapid City Black Hills and Western.  Besides a gallery of early photographs, their website has a large amount of critical information about the RCBH&W and neighboring towns.  Their information is not available without written permission, and even then commercial use is prohibited. I have obtained permission to use photos and such from this website for occasional posts.  Reusing photos posted on this site that was sourced from this Historical Society is prohibited.  Other information can be used with a full citation to the Silver City Historical Society.

Library of Congress: https://www.loc.gov/

The Library of Congress is the largest collection of American history in the world.  Many photographs, maps, documents and journal or newspaper articles are found there relating to South Dakota's history. Several collections are available that focus on South Dakota.  This is a very large source and so citations will be broken down into various collections.

The Grabill Collection: https://www.loc.gov/collections/grabill/

One large collection of images that focus on the Black Hills is the Grabill Collection.  193 images captured by John H.C. Grabill were donated to the Library of Congress between 1887 and 1892, making all 193 images public domain.

Other sources to come as they are used.
